First Impressions: The Nutty Irishman

Filed under: Bars, Dive Bars, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

Located near in the industrial park area of Santa Rosa, the Nutty Irishman (900 block of Piner Rd), is a very … interesting place. I wanted to go there because they participate in the pool league that I play on and I wanted to check out the pool table. The large, nondescript building butts up [...]

Paying Tribute with Electric Funeral, Covers with Tempus Fury….

Filed under: Bars, Cotati, Dive Bars, Live Music, Music Reviews, Sonoma County by zinchick

According to Wikipedia, the definition of the term “cover band” and “tribute band” are interchangeable. Lance Ozanix from Electric Funeral prefers the term “tribute band” to describe his Ozzy-Sabbath procession. The headlining band on this particular November 20th evening, Tempus Fury, refers to them selves as a “cover band”. In my humble, audio-phallic opinion, there [...]

First Impressions: Forestville Club

Filed under: Bars, Dive Bars, Forestville, Live Music, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

“Wow, it’s dark in here.”
You are almost obligated to utter this phrase the moment you step into the inky depths of the Forestville Club, (Front St, Forestville). Indeed, everyone who entered after us did exactly that. It’s kind of hard to judge the typical crowd of a bar when you visit on a sunny, Sunday [...]

What Happens in Cotati, Stays in Cotati

Filed under: Bars, Cotati, Dive Bars, Live Music, Pub, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

The Barflies were out after a long hiatus, so we decided to hit Cotati to see what was happening. Turns out, on a Thursday night at about 9pm, nothing is happening in Cotati.
“Oh, it’s still early,” someone said to me in the bar, “things pick up a lot later.” It’s true – Cotati is a [...]

Moondog’s Place in Santa Rosa

Filed under: Bars, Dive Bars, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: Dive Bar
Clientele: Let’s just go with “varied”
Spirits: Full bar, limited but good selection
Staff: Mr. Moondog is awesome!
I never would have found Moondog’s Place (1924 Sebastopol Rd) if A) I hadn’t been invited to play pool there and B) someone didn’t send me detailed instructions on how to find it. It’s tucked behind a laundromat [...]

DETHRONED! 440 Club loses out to The Zoo

Filed under: Bars, Dive Bars, Hot Bartenders, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: Dive Bar²
Clientele: Working stiffs, rough around the edges but friendly and tweakers
Spirits: full bar, emphasis on low, low end
Staff: Dice Master Nick
A barfly (an actual barfly, not just a barfly reader) suggested that we head over to The Zoo (527 Barham Ave, just off of Petaluma Hill Rd in Santa Rosa), so we off [...]

440 Club: A New Hope

Filed under: Bars, Dive Bars, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: Dive Bar
Clientele: Dedicated drinkers, Alt-Indie, Questionable Characters
Spirits: Classic selection, emphasis on low end
Staff: St.Brian, patron saint of drunks and mole people
The 440 Club, located at W. College and Mendocino, is the quintessential dive bar. A murky interior, unsanitary bathrooms and oddly charming, diminutive, swirled dance floor, all make for a homey atmosphere if [...]
