Jaspers Update: Your Italian-Irish Neighborhood Bar

Filed under: Bars, Sebastopol, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

In case you aren’t up to speed with your local bar gossip, Jasper O’Farrell’s has been taken over by new owners who are making some interesting changes. First and foremost, there is now food. Having grown up partially on the East Coast, Irish-Italian pairings are nothing new to me. I must have had 10 friends [...]

Paying Tribute with Electric Funeral, Covers with Tempus Fury….

Filed under: Bars, Cotati, Dive Bars, Live Music, Music Reviews, Sonoma County by zinchick

According to Wikipedia, the definition of the term “cover band” and “tribute band” are interchangeable. Lance Ozanix from Electric Funeral prefers the term “tribute band” to describe his Ozzy-Sabbath procession. The headlining band on this particular November 20th evening, Tempus Fury, refers to them selves as a “cover band”. In my humble, audio-phallic opinion, there [...]

First Impressions: Forestville Club

Filed under: Bars, Dive Bars, Forestville, Live Music, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

“Wow, it’s dark in here.”
You are almost obligated to utter this phrase the moment you step into the inky depths of the Forestville Club, (Front St, Forestville). Indeed, everyone who entered after us did exactly that. It’s kind of hard to judge the typical crowd of a bar when you visit on a sunny, Sunday [...]

What Happens in Cotati, Stays in Cotati

Filed under: Bars, Cotati, Dive Bars, Live Music, Pub, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

The Barflies were out after a long hiatus, so we decided to hit Cotati to see what was happening. Turns out, on a Thursday night at about 9pm, nothing is happening in Cotati.
“Oh, it’s still early,” someone said to me in the bar, “things pick up a lot later.” It’s true – Cotati is a [...]

Moondog’s Place in Santa Rosa

Filed under: Bars, Dive Bars, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: Dive Bar
Clientele: Let’s just go with “varied”
Spirits: Full bar, limited but good selection
Staff: Mr. Moondog is awesome!
I never would have found Moondog’s Place (1924 Sebastopol Rd) if A) I hadn’t been invited to play pool there and B) someone didn’t send me detailed instructions on how to find it. It’s tucked behind a laundromat [...]

The Black Rose – Santa Rosa

Filed under: Pub, Restaurants, Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, Whiskey Bars by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: Irish Pub
Clientele: Hard to say
Spirits: Full bar with good whiskey list
Staff: Friendly and knowledgable
I’ve been waiting to write the Black Rose Pub review for a while because I really like this place but every time I go there, I’m like the only person there. I’ve gone to the Black Rose (2074 Armory, on [...]

Ace in the Hole, Sebastopol or Graton?

Filed under: Brewery, Live Music, Pub, Restaurants, Sebastopol, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: NorCal Tavern
Clientele: Hippie Hipsters
Spirits: Beer, wine and cider
Staff: Unremarkable but friendly enough
Located in a portion of hulking twin green buildings at the corner of Hwy 116 and Graton Rd, the Ace in the Hole cider pub (is it in Sebastopol or is it in Graton? This is just one of the mysteries of the [...]

First Impressions: Quincy’s Pub in Rohnert Park

Filed under: Bars, Live Music, Pub, Restaurants, Rohnert Park, Sonoma County by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: Sports bar / Frat House Chic
Clientele: Varies by music genre
Spirits: See the Jager machine?
Staff: Friendly with a heavy hand
It’s impossible to say for sure what Quincy’s (6590 Commerce Blvd) is like during the daytime or any other time when there isn’t a psychobilly punk show happening, since I can’t think of any other reason [...]

19 Broadway – Fairfax

Filed under: Fairfax, Marin County, Nightclub by Girl Wonder

Atmosphere: Grungy nightclub
Clientele: Depends on the music
Spirits: Full bar with awesome drink specials
Staff: Great bartender and bar back, other employees are questionable
ZinChick and I headed down to 19 Broadway (located on…Broadway Ave. in Fairfax, look for the music review later) to see the oldest, still-performing punk rocker, the lead singer of the UK Subs. You [...]

Atmosphere: Upscale California Wine Bar
Clientele: Older (30’s+)
Spirits: Full bar, fine selection of beer and wine

I know you must be thinking…a full bar and a cute bartender, is that what it takes to get a perfect score on the Barfly? Well, no, but it doesn’t hurt.
Located at 8050 Bodega Avenue in [...]
